The Story Behind the Stories
The Rhinebeck Estate

‘Rhinebeck’ is based on this home Ivan summered at as a child, which was originally owned by his grandmother, Alice Astor.
The tale begins when I was a teenager. My father and I would meet from time to time for lunch, usually at the St. Regis Hotel in New York. One afternoon, he talked about his mother, Alice Astor, and how she had been reading a particular Egyptian Book of the Dead the night she had died. Her death had been so unusual and mysterious that he even had her New York townhouse exorcised. My grandfather had also mentioned in his autobiography, One Man in His Time, that Alice had become deeply involved with mystics and dark forces. After she divorced her fourth husband, she found herself utterly alone. What happened after, my grandfather didn’t say, but he hinted that her death was unexpected, unnecessary, and well before her time.
The story stuck with me, but what ultimately aroused my curiosity was an article in a 1997 issue of W Magazine, entitled, ‘Black Mischief’, with the subheading: ‘While researching Secret Muses, her acclaimed biography of Sir Fredrick Ashton, Julie Kavanagh unearthed the bizarre story of his patron Alice Astor. An influential heiress whose friends included Gore Vidal and Truman Capote, her last years were marked by a fascination with the occult. Did it also play a part in her death?’ The article concluded that she was likely murdered. I thought that was improbable, but the possibility was intriguing. My fiction series Eye of the Moon was the result.

Introducing Characters from the Eye of the Moon Series
Percy is the narrator of the series. At the beginning, Percy is tentative, paranoid, and unsure. His parents traveled continuously and as a result, Percy and Johnny Dodge grew up together.
They attended the same schools and later formed a trading partnership, but it ended in ruin. After many years apart and over a long weekend, they reunite and resume their close friendship.
Alice left a deep impression on Johnny and Percy even though she died when they were ten. Her life is uncovered through her journal entries, letters, and by the recollections of others, revealing a complex and powerful personality.
She was a well-respected Egyptologist and mystic with a nonetheless commanding presence that could drive both men and women mad. Despite her death, she still influences the residents and visitors of Rhinebeck.
Johnny is the nephew of Alice, and the only son of John Sr. and Anne Dodge. Johnny is in his early thirties, slim, fit, and with the gift of persuasion from a young age. He is blond, extroverted, handsome, and charismatic. He is the opposite of Percy, his closest friend. He and Percy work brilliantly together.
Lord Bromley is the epitome of the English lord in manners and speech, yet he skillfully camouflages his cunning cruelty. He is Alice’s ex-husband and nemesis, and thus Stanley’s archenemy.
Stanley was introduced to Alice as a young butler. He is the model of a faithful servant as she navigates disastrous marriages and ancient curses.
Bright-eyed and never quite aging, Dagmar is the cook but only on the surface. She wields much more influence at Rhinebeck than her title would suggest. From her kitchen, she produces delicacies that heal and transform while she keeps a finger on the pulse of all that happens at the estate.
Maw is the Dodge matriarch and owner of a fortune that rivals that of a small country. She uses her massive fortune to goad her children and everyone else into doing what she wants. She has a soft spot for dogs and horses, who obey her unconditionally.
Father of Johnny, John Sr. is the head of Dodge Capital, a large New York investment firm. He took over the financially chaotic estate of Rhinebeck after the mysterious death of his half-sister, Alice.
Anne is the wife of John Sr. and mother of Johnny. She acts as a mother figure to Percy since she raised him alongside Johnny. She is the best friend of Percy's mother, Mary.
Bonnie is Maw’s daughter and John’s half-sister. She will do whatever it takes to win her mother’s favor and fortune. Behind a clumsy and fawning exterior, she hides a brilliant mind.
The baron looks like Napoleon. He is short and sightly stout but also a cunning and ruthless entrepreneur who loves making deals.
Elsa is a striking beauty who exudes an erotic sensuality and frankness. Beneath this lies a woman who is refined, highly educated, daring, insightful, and as ruthless as her husband.
Bruni dazzles even at a distance, as beautiful as her mother. She is a brilliant lawyer who can be manipulative and sly but is ever loyal to her family despite the demons she battles beneath the surface.
Malcolm is an old friend of Alice’s and he always manages to be present at the house parties when significant events happen. He is exceptionally tall, and he notices far more than his appearance and demeanor might suggest.
Know as Cobb (or “The Doctor”) to the criminal world, he could be mistaken for a boxer who has spent too much time in the ring. His name is Angus Maxwell-Hughes and, contrary to his thuggish appearance, he is an outstanding physician and surgeon.
There are other characters, whom you will meet.
You are invited to discover them all.
